Fitzgerald Architecture Studio collaborates with The Office for Planning and Architecture on one of the first recognized affordable Green Housing Projects in the State of Pennsylvania, recently awarded by the Redevelopment Authority of Cumberland County.
The main goals of the fourteen-unit multi-family dwelling complex is to efficiently provide affordable dwellings that benefit it's occupants, neighbors and surrounding community, while minimizing it's impact on pools of finite resources. The complex uses materials that limit: the extraction and harvesting of raw materials, the pollutants emitted during manufacturing, the energy used to produce a product, and the energy and resources used to transport materials to the site. The building design also integrates natural ventilation, natural light and mechanical systems to maintain temperature and humidity for optimum comfort and efficiency while reducing risk of mold mildew and contaminants in each unit. Other issues addressed by the design include water conservation and stormwater management, reduced and sustainable material use, and recycling during and post occupancy.
