Fitzgerald Architecture Studio collaborated with The Office for Planning and Architecture on one of the first recognized affordable Green Housing Projects in the State of Pennsylvania. The project was recently awarded by the Redevelopment Authority of Cumberland County.
The main goal of the fourteen-unit, multi-family dwelling complex is to efficiently provide affordable dwellings that benefit its occupants, neighbors and surrounding community, while minimizing its impact on pools of finite resources. The complex uses materials that limit the extraction and harvesting of raw materials, the pollutants emitted during manufacturing, the energy used to produce a product, and the energy and resources used to transport materials to the site. The building design also integrates natural ventilation, natural light and mechanical systems to maintain temperature and humidity for optimum comfort and efficiency while reducing risk of mold, mildew and contaminants in each unit. Other issues addressed by the design include water conservation and stormwater management, reduced and sustainable material use, and recycling during construction and occupancy.
